Oral cancer includes cancers of the mouth and the pharynx (the back of the throat). Oral cancer accounts for roughly two percent of all cancers diagnosed annually in the United States. Approximately 35,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer each year and about 7,600 will die from the disease. On average, 60 percent of those with the disease will survive more than 5 years. Oral cancer most often occurs in people over the age of 40 and affects more than twice as many men as women.

When performing oral cancer screenings, Dr. Sheri uses a device called Dental Oral Exam System (DOE). Early detection is important. A cancer screening oral exam is painless and takes only a few moments. This screening can be completed during your regular dental-checkup/cleaning appointment. During the screening, the dentist or hygienist will check your face, neck, lips and entire mouth for signs of cancer.
Once a lesion or suspicious area is detected, a sample is obtained using a painless brush technique. The sample is sent to an oral pathologist who determines if further investigation is necessary. If oral cancer or any type of cancer runs in your family, or you just want the peace of mind a clear oral pathology exam can bring, call Dynamic Dental Wellness at (703) 775-0002.
