Oil Pulling for Dental Health

December 21, 2022

Oil pulling has been around for 3,000 years, originating in the Ayurvedic practices of India and surrounding regions, but has recently received mainstream attention as one of the best ways to improve dental health.

Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest medical systems that originated in ancient India. This system uses herbal compounds, special diets, and other practices to help treat the body. The early Ayurvedic texts suggest that oil pulling help to detoxify the body and cure about 30 systemic diseases such as headache, migraine, diabetes, asthma, and many more.

A study in the journal of Ayurveda showed that there was a significant reduction in the amount of plaque and gingivitis in the group which used oil pulling. Another study showed oil pulling reduced the amount of Streptococcus mutans in plaque and saliva.

Oral Health and the Body

The Ayurveda medicine suggest that oral health is correlated to the overall health of an individual. It is also documented in modern medicine that shows a link between oral health and the overall health of an individual.

How To Do Oil Pulling?

First choose an oil that is pleasant to you. Some common oils are coconut, sunflower, olive, and sesame. Then swish gently with the oil for a few minutes. You can do this either in the morning, at night, or both. The recommended amount is one to two tablespoons, but it can vary by person. You can start with smaller amount and go from there, so you can get used to the taste. You can also start with swishing for a few minutes, and then build up from there. Time can vary from 3 minutes to 20 minutes. When you’re done, spit out all the oil out in the trash. Avoid swallowing the oil because it can be loaded with bacteria. Then rinse with a mixture of warm water and salt. Brush your teeth afterwards, and you’re all set for the day.
