Early Treatment Orthodontic Exams

Orthodontic treatment does not have to be stressful. At your first visit with the orthodontist, you will meet the staff and tour the office.

After being escorted to the exam room, the orthodontist will use large lights and a tiny handheld mirror to exam your child’s teeth and gums. The orthodontist will also check the positions of the upper and lower jaws and how they fit together.

Meanwhile, the orthodontist will answer and questions you have and address any concerns about your child’s teeth. Dr. Sheri Salartash will discuss whether your child needs treatment, which type they would recommend and when treatment should begin.

You will be allowed to remain with your child during the exam and your child should not experience any discomfort.

When Should a Child Have Their First Orthodontic Exam?

According to the AAO, children should visit the orthodontist by age seven. At this point, the orthodontist can recognize and problems and begin early treatment.

However, if you have concerns about your child, you can visit the orthodontist sooner.

X-rays

At the first visit, your child will need to have a panoramic x-ray. This helps the orthodontist diagnose issues more accurately and provide the best treatment for your child.

The orthodontist will also take photographs of your child’s teeth and face to help measure progress.
