Holistic Dentist, What is the basic Difference?

July 17, 2019

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic or biological dentistry is a type of dentistry that considers the overall body health, as well as diet, mental and life style rather than just treating the teeth. According to some prestigious research, each tooth is connected to some other parts of our body through the meridian going to it. For example, if we look at the meridian chart connecting the tooth #11 (The Upper Left Cuspid), we will notice that some of our body parts such as hip, ankle (lateral side), liver, and gallbladder cross the same meridian. You can see more relations in the chart below.

What are the differences between conventional and holistic dentistry?

Conventional dentistry tend to use the mouth as a separate and an independent entity, thus procedures applied do not consider the relations of the mouth to other parts of the body health. Whereas, holistic dentistry cares about the entire health of the person and consider mouth is the start of a whole body health. Thus, integrative procedures treat mouth and teeth as a critical part of the body. Holistic dental approaches which sometimes involve more than just the teeth and gums are more conservative when providing treatments to patients. Therefore, the treatment plans are individualized based on each patient’s case and health condition.

What are common holistic dental procedures?

Although there are many terms referring to Holistic Dentistry, such as: biologic dentistry, unconventional dentistry, alternative dentistry, and biologic dentistry, there are some general commons that help patients easily identify them. For instant, holistic dental offices don’t use mercury fillings (amalgam), and don’t use fluoride to all of their patients. Holistic dentists use herbal products, biological materials and biocompatible fillings in their practices. Also, avoiding Root Canal is also an important in integrative dental approaches. In general, the holistic or integrative procedure can involve face, muscle, Temporomandibular joint (TMJ), neck and head to help patients reach their optimal health.

How to look for a holistic/ whole-health dentist in the area?

There are some associations created to provide supports and guidance to practitioners of holistic and alternative dentistry, while educating the public of the benefits of holistic dentistry for their health and well-being, such as Holistic Dental Association, Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry, and Holistic Practitioner Directory. Patients who are looking for Holistic Dentistry in their area can search for practitioners who are qualified by those associations.
